CARIBOU- William H. Weatherhead, age 80, passed away after a brief illness on February 12, 2024, with family by his side. William, or “Bill” as most knew him, was born on March 15,1943 in Fort Fairfield, Maine to Hayes and Annie (Rasmussen) Weatherhead. He grew up on the family’s potato farm in Limestone, Maine, where he graduated high school in 1960. He married his wife of over 58 years, Bonnie (White) Weatherhead, on June 11,1965. Together, they farmed until he went to work for Maine Potato Growers as a salesman. In 1966, they welcomed a daughter, Martha, whose lifelong love of horses began with the first pony he bought her when she was 3. Bill worked for Huber Engineered Woods from 1980 until his retirement in 2003. Just before retirement, he embarked on a new adventure, opening a brand new plant for the company in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.
Bill was known for his work ethic and for selflessly helping others. He was a gifted carpenter, building the home he and Bonnie lived in on Little Madawaska Lake and completed projects for family and friends. He was an active volunteer in the community, and recently served as treasurer of the Sportsmen’s Inc. in Stockholm. He always believed in giving someone a “hand up”. He enjoyed snowmobiling and helping to maintain the trails. Bill was strong, reliable, and dedicated to his family. For the last 23 years, Bill especially enjoyed spending time with his great-nephews, “the boys”- Noah; Nicholas; Evan and Reid, whom he considered grandsons. He spent countless hours finding a new piece of equipment for them to have fun with, only to have them drive it through a mud pit or tear it apart. Bill would always fix it up again and top it off with gas, after some half-hearted grumbling. He introduced them to a love of Westerns and good, homemade baked beans. In their own words, they are “so sad, but so grateful to have been brought up by such a great man”.
In addition to his wife and daughter of Stockholm, he is survived by a brother, David Weatherhead and his wife Betsy of Durham, NC; sister Sally Smith of Pensacola, FL; nieces Alana Margeson and her husband, Erich, of Westmanland, ME; Kerry Weatherhead-Shenoy and her husband, Nithin, of Locust Valley, NY; and Darryl Weatherhead and her husband, Richard Mason, of Durham, NC, as well as several great-nephews and great-nieces. Bill recently met the newest generation of “mischief-makers”, Parker Francis, son of Noah and Emma Margeson.
The family would like to thank the staff of Cary Medical Center for their outstanding care. Calling hours will be held Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 10AM until 12PM at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou. Graveside services will be held in the spring.
