Verna C. Smith

CARIBOU – Verna C. Smith. 79, passed away September 23, 2019 at Caribou following a brief illness. She was born June 6, 1940, in Fort Kent, the daughter of the late Noel and Julienne (Belanger) Cyr. At the age of 10, Verna and her family moved to Presque Isle, where she attended and graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1958. Verna then attended and graduated from L.P.N. School in 1959, and operating Room School in 1960. On November 5, 1972 she married Paul G. Smith, who predeceased her. Verna worked at AR Gould Hospital from 1959 until 1987. She then went to work with Dr. Craig W. Young in his outpatient ophthalmology surgical center, where she worked from 1988 until her retirement in 2015. She enjoyed reading Robin Cook and V.C. Andrews Books, doing ceramics and working in her greenhouse with flowers and vegetables – she was especially well known for her flowers and tomato plants. Verna also enjoyed road trips to Bar Harbor for lobster at the wharf. She is survived by her special friend and companion of many years, Henry Gilman of Caribou, cousins, Polly Jackson and Bea Bard both of Fort Kent, Theresa Cyr of Millinocket, and her close friend, Wanda Jewell. Private family services will be held at a later date.
