Caribou and Fort Bragg N.C. –Sergeant First Class Daniel G. Alward, 31 died unexpectedly June 9, 2012 at Fayetteville N.C. as the result of a motorcycle accident. He was born Portsmouth, VA. January 10, 1981 the son of Gary and Yvonne Alward. He was a 1999 graduate of Caribou High School and enlisted in the US army Infantry shortly after graduation. Sgt. Alward was assigned to V Corp Headquarters in Germany, The 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne Division as Team Leader and Brigade S3 NCOIC,96th Civil Affairs Battalion, the 95th Civil affairs Brigade at Fort Brag, where he served as Civil Affairs NCO in the Civil Military Operations Cell and on the Civil affairs Team 624 and as the Team Sergeant of Civil affairs team 623. In April 2012 he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), at Fort Bragg, NC where he served as a Group Instructor for the Civil Affairs Qualification Course. From 2003 – 2007 he was a recruiter at Fayetteville, N.C. During his career SFC Alward deployed to Qatar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, to Iraq in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. SFC Alward attended numerous military operational and leadership schools. He received the Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, four Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, and Iraq Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, U.S. Army Gold Recruiters Badge, Parachutists Badge, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Sgt. Alward is survived by his loving wife Amanda Parks and his son Evan of Hope Mills, N.C. He was deeply loved by his father, Gary Alward of Tolland, CT., his mother Yvonne Nimmer of Caribou, his brother David Alward and his children Dustin and Delaney of Presque Isle, Amanda’s mother Roxann Parks of Caribou, her father Mark Parks of Woodland, her brother Mark C. Parks of Hope Mills, NC and her grandmother Alberta Viel of Mapleton. He will be sadly missed by his grandmother Maria Marcolla of Vigo Ton, Italy, his aunts Sherry Alward of Caribou, Linda Scovill and her husband Marty of East Hampton, CT, Marsha Reilly and her husband David or Colchester, CT, Sandra Marcolla of Vigo Ton, Italy, and his uncles Carl Alward and his wife Betty of East Hampton, CT, Merwyn Estabrook and his wife Cathy of Spring Hill, FL, Randy Marcolla and his wife Elvira of Vigo Ton, Italy, numerous cousins and many friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents Leo and Madeleine Alward, his grandfather Isidoro Marcolla of his uncle Georgio Marcolla and his brother-in-law Evan Parks. Friends may call at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street Caribou from 6-8 pm Tuesday. Funeral Services will be held from the chapel of the funeral home Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 2:00pm. Interment will be in the Woodland Cemetery.
