Richard A. Seigars

New Sweden-Richard Alden Seigars, died February 18, 2015 at Cary Medical Center, Caribou. He was born in Augusta, Maine on March 17, 1926 the son of Charles T. Seigars and Freda (Libby) Seigars. He graduated from Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville where he played on the basketball team and was president of his class. Following his graduation in 1944 he was drafted into the U S Navy and served as an Electrician’s Mate aboard an LSM in the Pacific. After the war he attended the University of Maine in Orono, graduating with a BA in Business Administration. In college he was a brother in Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Following graduation he married his college sweetheart Gloria Noyes and eventually settled with his family in Aroostook County. There he was employed by the United State Air Force for over 20 years supervising budget operations for Loring Air Force Base in Limestone. Taking an early retirement, he moved from Caribou with his wife to their farm in New Sweden where he managed their woodlands and raised standard-bred racehorses. He trained and raced his horses with considerable success. A talented athlete Richard excelled in many sports during his lifetime. He particularly liked hunting and fly fishing. After earning his private pilot’s license he spent many hours flying small planes. He is survived by his wife Gloria; a daughter Mary Dukes of Denver, Colorado; a daughter Libbey Seigars and her husband Steve Spencer of Whitefield, Maine. He is also survived by step granddaughter Megan Spencer, step grandson Ian Spencer and his wife Jamie, and a great grandchild Finn, a niece Melissa Pinault and her husband Jeffrey, several cousins and many friends. He was predeceased by his son-in-law William Dukes, his sister Patricia Edward, and a special cousin Belva Watchorn. A springtime internment at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Caribou is planned.
