CARIBOU - Philip Roy Bennett, 96, beloved husband of Helen (Bell) Bennett, died peacefully March 3, 2015 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou Maine. He was born in Caribou, December 29, 1918, the son of Roy and Ella (Crockett) Bennett. Philip was a graduate of the Caribou High School, Class of 1937. After graduation from High School, he worked with his father at Roy L. Bennett and Sons Grocery Store on Limestone Street until leaving for U. S. Army Service. A World War II U. S. Army Veteran, he served as Technician, 5th Class at Fort Ord, California where he was responsible for handling the payroll for the troops arriving from the East Coast. After discharge from the Army, he returned to Caribou and resumed working with his Father Roy and Brothers Ivan and Eddie in the grocery business. In 1955, he became the owner of Bennett’s Nationwide Grocery Store on Limestone Street, later in partnership of Bennett’s Hardware Store. He was a lifelong member of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church. Later on he and his wife Helen moved to Southern Maine where they were worked as House Parent at the Sweetser’s Children’s Home in Saco. Phil and Helen enjoyed working in the reception area at the Sparhawk Oceanfront Resort in Ogunquit, Maine. Surviving, are two sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard and Greta of New Sweden; Reginald and April of Wells: eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Helen in 2004, and son, Philip Jr. 2011. Also he was predeceased by one sister, Flora, two brothers and sisters-in-law - Ivan and Millie and Edwin and Winona. In the spring, a private service celebrating Philip’s life will be held at the Webster Cemetery, Limestone, Maine. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to contribute in memory of Phil may do so through the Gray Memorial Methodist Church memory fund, or to the Jefferson Cary Foundation at Cary Medical Center, P.O.
