Caribou - Martha Loueen (Jones) Mahoney, 85, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2022 in Portland, ME. She was born to Leland and Vena (Smith) Jones on August 17,1937. The youngest of 5 girls, Martha had a very happy childhood. Some of her fondest memories were of time spent at the family camp on the Tobique River. It was there that she began her love of camp life which carried through her entire life. She graduated from Fort Fairfield High School in 1955 (yes, one of the “Fort Girls”), and went on to attend Nasson College. Martha met the love of her life, Graydon, and they married in 1958. Martha held many jobs including working alongside her parents at Jones Hardware, the Paramount Theatre, and Sears and Roebuck. It wasn’t until she joined her husband at Mahoney’s Real Estate in 1960, that she found her true calling. For nearly 60 years, Martha and Graydon built a successful business side-by-side and became one of Maine’s longest running husband-and-wife brokerage teams. Martha became known as the area’s “camp specialist” helping many families find the perfect camp.
In addition to being a successful Realtor and businesswoman, Martha was also very active in her community. She was a member of several groups including: Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Girl Scouts, Maine Loring Association, Save Loring Committee, Maine Highway Safety Commission and the Cross Lake West Side Road Association.
Martha enjoyed swimming, golfing, bird hunting, canoeing, traveling, and playing racquetball. She once set a goal for herself to walk EVERY street in Caribou; highlighting all the miles on a printed map of the city! Martha made many wonderful friends throughout the years; often befriending new clients and inviting them over for dinner, brunch or upta camp! She was a wonderful cook and took pride in decorating her home each season to entertain her family and friends. Her love of music was expressed by playing piano, playing saxophone in her high school band, the Caribou Community Band and the Thomas Park Band.
Cross Lake was where Martha spent many days as it was her favorite place to be. She was fortunate to have her daughters and family enjoy it as much as she did. One of her great joys in life was spending time with her five grandchildren, most notably the summers spent together at the lake.
Martha is survived by her husband of 64 years, Graydon Mahoney, of Caribou, two daughters, Laura Press (Lance) of Fort Mill, SC, Diane Griffiths (Matt) of South Portland, grandchildren, Matt Press of Denver, CO, Rachel Press of Huntersville, NC, Hunter Griffiths of South Portland, Kathryn Griffiths of Fort Myers, FL, and Andrew Griffiths of South Portland and her sister, Nancy Gaunce (Frank) of Illinois. She was predeceased by her parents, her daughter, Linda Jeanne Mahoney in 1967, and three sisters, Alvaretta Gillis, Priscilla Merritt and Alice McCrea.
