Marjorie (Marge) Nelson Smith, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2024 at the Home of the Good Shepherd in Saratoga Springs, NY. She was born in Fort Fairfield, on September 10, 1935 to the late Frank and Mary (Rochford) Nelson. She attended Fort Fairfield High School and soon met and married the love of her life, Gary Smith of Caribou. Marge and Gary shared almost 65 wonderful years of marriage together, always a pair, always together until Gary passed in the spring of 2022. They are most certainly united again in heaven.
Marge and Gary raised their children on the family farm in Caribou until the 80s, and then retired to Old Orchard Beach, and Albany, NY to be closer to family, where they built new friendships and doted on their grandchildren. Marge was a gentle and loving soul with a fun adventurous streak. Whether it was enjoying afternoon tea, watching Boston sports or accepting a dare to ride a roller coaster at age 70, Marge had the same spirited approach, and always in her hallmark style - a sharp blazer and black loafers.
Marge will be sadly missed by her loving family, her son, Kevin (Cheryl), daughter Sare, four beloved grandchildren; Morgan, Kyle (Lauren), Lindsey (Quinn), Riley (Ben) and great-grandsons Galen, Sam, Sawyer and Finnegan, brothers Patrick Nelson and Peter Nelson, brother-in-law Ronnie Smith (Doris), sister-in-law Sue Smith Giggey, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister Marion Nelson Reed, and brothers Lawrence, Ralph, John and Philip “Bud” Nelson, brother-in-law Jerry Smith and loving husband, Gary Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial honoring both Marge and Gary will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 31 Thomas Avenue, Caribou, with burial following at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery in Fort Fairfield. A Celebration of Life will be held at Northern Maine Brewing Co., 22 Main Street, Caribou, from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga County, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs NY 12866.
