John W. Bougie

April 11, 1953 — March 21, 2015

NEW SWEDEN – John W. Bougie, 61, passed away peacefully March 21, 2015 at his New Sweden home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Sanford, April 11, 1953 and raised in Alfred, the son of the late Rudolph and Dorothy (Sayward) Bougie. John attended Sanford High School and was a 1971 graduate of Massabesic High School. He was a 1975 graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle where he received his degree in early childhood education. During his entire teaching career, from 1976 through his retirement in 2010, John taught grade 5 at the Woodland Consolidated School, where he was known as “Mr. B”. John was very proud when he was able to make a positive impact on any of his students and has been looked up to by many of them. As a youngster, John worked in his grandparent’s greenhouse and his mother’s floral shop. With the knowledge he learned at a young age, John developed a passion for gardening. Every summer John would plant a huge vegetable garden for his family, making sure to grow lots of extra in order to share with friends and neighbors. He grew what could be called the sweetest corn possible and everyone who was lucky enough to eat it would rave about it. John also loved to travel with his special companion Lisa (Dufour) Brissette and one of his favorite trips was one they took to Alaska several years ago. He also enjoyed playing golf in the summer months and was an avid sports enthusiast always rooting for the New England Patriots, the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics. While John enjoyed working, golfing and traveling, the most important and gratifying thing he did was raise his children. He was extraordinarily proud of them and their accomplishments and appreciated the love and care they provided to him during his illness. John was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, the Caribou Country Club and was a former member of the Nordic Lakers Snowmobile Club. John will be lovingly remembered by his son, Ryan Bougie of New Sweden, his daughter, Erin Bougie and fiancé Brian Allen of Arlington, VA, his loving companion Lisa Brissette of Woodland, one brother and sister-in-law Mark and Kim Bougie of Lexington, KY, nephews, Matthew and Michael Bougie and a niece Kristin Bougie, an aunt, Doris Hughes of Naples, FL and many cousins. He will also be fondly remembered by those John considered to be his “in-laws”, Oreille and Albertine Dufour of Caribou, Diane Dickinson, David Dufour, Dee and Tim Diohep, Abby Quist and Steve Dufour, as well as his special friends Steve Anderson, Bub and Kristi Anderson, and Philip Caverhill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Saturday, March 28, 2015 from the parish of the Precious Blood Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Following the service all are invited to gather with the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments in the parish hall. Spring interment will be in the Alfred Cemetery, Alfred. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mr. Bougie may do so through the CH Carlson Scholarship Fund, c/o Woodland Consolidated School or Sarah’s House of Brewer, www.sarahshouseofmaine.org.
