John E. Vanier Obituary
(2/2/1930 – 2/9/2021)

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.  John passed on peacefully Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at home, with his family by his side.

He was born in Madawaska, Maine on February 2, 1930, one of seven children born to Emile and Eva, and later Irene, Vanier. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy where he contracted tuberculosis.  He remained forever grateful to have been a part of the successful trials for and development of the drug streptomycin.  After his discharge, he attended and graduated from Husson College and subsequently had a successful career as Finance Director at the former Loring Air Force Base.

John married Theresa Daigle of Edmundston, Canada on January 18, 1954 and they were blessed with 4 children – Jane, Michael, Ann & Peter.  Among his many loves were his appreciation for a good story, a good laugh, and good friends. He especially loved his time at his camp on an island in the province of Quebec and winter breaks in St. Pete Beach, Florida.  Covid-19 travel restrictions prevented him from one last opportunity to enjoy both and he sadly missed his games of cribbage, fresh oysters on the beach, toddies at sunset with longtime friends and family, breakfast with the boys, and being the center of attention wherever he was.

The consequence of a long life, John was predeceased by his parents, his wife Theresa, son Peter and siblings: Armand, Blanche (Sis), Eldon, Corinne, and Paul.  He is survived by his children: Jane (Egeler) and husband Bill of Presque Isle; Michael and wife Nancy of Portland, ME; Ann of Scarborough; three grandchildren Tera and husband Bennett Meulendyk, Erica and fiancé Matthew Thompson, and Tony Alcala and partner Fiona Rice.  He is further survived by his sister Eva and numerous nieces and nephews.  His later life was enriched by his special friend Grace Beaulieu of Ville Degelis, Quebec who will mourn his passing as only a special friend can.  He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed by all.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours.  A graveside service will be held in Madawaska at a later date.  The family wishes to thank all the members of John’s medical team for their caring, compassionate efforts.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Wounded Warriors or any veterans support charity.
