Hollis E. Irvine

December 5, 1931 — August 4, 2014

CARIBOU – Hollis E. Irvine, 82, died August 4, 2014 at a Caribou health care facility. He was born in Fort Fairfield December 5, 1931 the son of the late Selden “Ted” and Goldie (Pelkey) Irvine. He was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, attended Ricker College and was a 1958 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono where he was a member of the Phi Eta Kappa Fraternity. On July 27, 1956 he married Madelyn LeVasseur. Mr. Irvine served with the US Army attached to the Central Intelligence Agency. He was proud of his service to his country and began to share his stories with his family later in his life. He was assigned to the O.S.S. in Germany during the Cold War years. His work, now declassified and an interesting read, included his meticulous attention to detail, his ability to converse and his ability to follow instructions. He believed in responsibility to others, the freedoms we have as citizens and being thoughtful in how one acts. Mr. Irvine was the President of the Aroostook County Federal Savings and Loan for many years. Mr. Irvine was an active member in his community. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Caribou Lodge 170 A.F. & A.M., Anah Temple Shrine and Scottish Rite Bodies. Being outdoors in the wilderness meant so much to him. The camp on Madawaska Lake was home for the summer months and a gathering place for hunters and skiers in the winter. Trips on the Allagash River with loaded canoes, family and friends and many fishing rods created a sense of adventure and an appreciation for the environment for all of his children and grandchildren. He knew the woods of northern Maine and enjoyed taking his grandchildren for drives on the logging roads looking for moose while sharing an ice cream. He was a private pilot and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Hollis loved his family, his work, and his community. Free time was always spent doing something meaningful. His wife of 55 years, Madelyn and he made a home for their children with an open door for family, friends and even strangers in need of a helping hand. He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Hollis and Gayle Irvine Jr. of Greenwich, NJ, and Andrew and Elizabeth Irvine of Salem, NJ. Two daughters and a son-in-law, Angela Irvine and significant other Eric Asnis of Berlin, VT and Andrea and John Swanberg of Caribou.
