Harold “Peter” Saunders, 68, passed away peacefully Dec. 1 at Fort Kent. A friend to all, Peter has now joined his daughter, Tina (Saunders) Cousins, and two grandchildren, Cortina and Cody, who predeceased him 12 years ago this month. He was born August 8, 1942 in Caribou, the son of the late Marguerite (St. Peter) and Cecile Saunders. After growing up in Caribou, he worked for Birdseye Foods, American Kitchen, and Frazier Papers of Madawaska. Mr Saunders was actively involved in the Caribou Men’s Softball and Bowling leagues for many years, and was also know as one of the “town’s best dancers,” winning several awards and trophies. He also loved to gather with family and friends for a BBQ or other types of celebrations, especially during the holidays; wanting to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. He was passionate about people, and loved to make them laugh and smile. While he lived in Caribou most of his life, he did spend a lot of time in Madawaska, and lived the last two years of his life at Forest Hills Nursing Home in Fort Kent, where he made many more special friends. While there, he enjoyed visits from family and friends. He is survived by his fiance of many years, Helen Caron of Caribou and by 8 of his 9 children: Todd Saunders and his wife, Susan, of Georgia; Tony Saunders and his wife, Bobby, of Caribou; Tammy Lothrop, and her husband, Ben, of Lincoln and Ashland; Terry Saunders of Caribou; Justin Saunders of Caribou; Peter “PJ” Saunders of Caribou; Chad Saunders of Caribou; and Matthew Saunders of Caribou. He is also survived by a sister, Marlene (Saunders) Legasse and her husband, Richard “Dick” Legasse of North Carolina, a brother, Glenwood Saunders and his wife, Jeanine, of Madawaska and another brother, Cecil “Bub” Saunders, also of Madawaska. Many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mr. Saunders was predeceased by two brothers, Charlie and Caroll Saunders.
