Gilbert G. Hallett

August 29, 1936 — February 13, 2019

Caribou - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved brother and uncle, Gilbert G. Hallett, 82, on February 13, 2019.  He was born in Connor on Aug 29, 1936, the son of Sheldon G. and Ruby (Richards) Hallett.

He attended Caribou High School and Zion Bible Institute in Barrington, Rhode Island.  He was a 5th generation potato farmer on the Madawaska Road until his retirement when he became a most dedicated son to his mother.  He enjoyed chauffeuring her to pick berries, visit relatives, shop, and dine.

Best known as “Gib”, he was also a favorite uncle to his nieces and nephews with many of them growing up within walking distance of his home and the family farm. He always could make them laugh and they looked forward to time spent with him. In his later years, he especially liked visiting his sister, nieces and grand-nieces through-out Maine, New Hampshire, and California. They held a special place in his heart. He also enjoyed making spontaneous day and overnight trips throughout Maine and New Brunswick. He was very interested in genealogy and family history and enjoyed viewing his old family photos with family members. He was recently pleased to learn that he had two founding-father ancestors who settled New England in the early 1600's. At home, Gilbert enjoyed his flower gardens around his house and on his deck every summer and looked forward to the hot weather. It was never too hot for him! He also enjoyed making old fashioned ice cream for holidays, family gatherings, and playing his piano.

Most of all, Gib loved all of his family and they all loved him back.  He will be remembered for his funny and infectious laugh and will always be missed.

In addition to his parents, Gib was predeceased by his brother, Gaylin Hallett, sister, Beryl (Hallett) Swaney, brother-in-law, Donald Swaney, and three nephews, Brian Swaney, Brent Swaney, David Swaney, and infant brother, Melvin. He is survived by his brother, Douglas Hallett and his wife Doreen (Akerson) Hallett, and his sister-in-law Madeline (Wallace) Hallett, all of Connor, ME. He is also survived by eight special nieces and nephews and their families; Steven Swaney, El Monte, CA, Rhonda Hallett Pope, Dover, NH, Delwood Hallett, Caribou, ME, Darin Hallett, Saco, ME, Alan Hallett, Woodland, ME, Robert Hallett, Caribou, ME, Cheryl Hallett Kidwell, Falmouth, ME, and Lori Hallett, Portland, ME.

At his request, there will be no funeral service.  In the spring, there will be a graveside memorial service at Evergreen Cemetery, Caribou, Maine.
