Brunswick and Caribou-Gordon William Searles, 70, of Caribou, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday April 24, 2013. Born December 3, 1942 in Waterville, Maine to the late Dennis and Leonette Searles, Gordon was raised by the late Maggie and Elroy Russell. He graduated from Caribou High School in 1960 and married Shirley (Doak) Searles on August 10, 1962. They lived together in Caribou for many years before relocating to Brunswick in 1994. A Vietnam vet, Gordon served in the US Army from 1965-1968 during which he earned a Vietnam service medal, a Vietnam campaign medal and a National Defense Service Medal. He then spent over 30 years working civil service for both Loring Air Force Base and Brunswick Naval Station. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and dazzling the neighborhood with his Christmas lights. He leaves his wife, Shirley Searles of Brunswick; his children, Laura Searles Roope of Castle Hill, Mark Searles and his wife Karen, of Weare, NH, and Daniel Searles and his wife Jennifer, of Bethany, CT; his brothers, Henry Searles and his wife Shirley, of Caribou, Tim Searles and his wife Linda, of Arundel, and Michael Searles and his wife Ellen of Michigan; as well as his grandchildren, Lisa and Lindsey Rockwell, Ben Searles and Jacob Searles. step-grandchildren; Phillip, Dannah and Andrew Roope. He also leaves sisters-in-law, Carole Bittle and husband Larry of Stockholm, and Paula Shuckerow and husband Rich of Georgia as well as many nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by his constant four-legged companion, Katie. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Lisa Searles and son-in-law, David Roope. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 28 at 1pm at Mockler Funeral Home at 24 Reservoir St, Caribou Maine. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 noon Sunday until times of services. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gordon’s name to the Disabled American Veterans, DAV Memorial Program, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250.
