Caribou and Florida-Germaine Rose LaPlante 87 passed away May 28, 2016 at Pensacola Florida. She was born July 28, 1928, the daughter of the late Maria and Joseph (St. Pierre) Corbin of Van Buren. Youngest of 5 children, she is survived by her sister Ida Boudoir of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Germaine was married in 1947 to Noel LaPlante of Cyr Plantation and was the mother of 5 children, Noella Hilfilker of Salem Oregon, married to Jeff Hilfilker; Armand LaPlante of Glenburn, married to Karyl LaPlante; Joan Patty of Pensacola, Florida, married to Harold Patty; Phillip LaPlante of Kissimmee, Florida, married to Rose LaPlante; and Lorraine Chamberlain of Woodland, married to Joe Chamberlain. She has seven grandchildren; Shawn LaPlante of Hermon, Jessica Lajoie of Caribou, Dana Carson of Summerdale, Alabama , Chris Carson of Woodland, Robin Olsen, Stephen Joye & Jon Joye of Salem, Oregon, and eight great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews. A model of independent working mother before her time, she partnered with her husband Noel to build two separate businesses in Caribou – Laplante’s Dairy and Uncle Noel’s Campground. She worked full time in the dairy until it was sold in 1967, from there she began working at Converse Shoe Factory in Presque Isle until it’s closure while supporting the Campground business; then worked several more years at Mecon in Caribou, until she was forced to retire due to an injury on the job. She and her husband then moved to Kissimmee, Florida where she remained until 2007 at which time she relocated to be with her daughter Joan and son-in-law Harold in Pensacola, Florida. Germaine was a member of the Henry B Pratt Post 15 American Legion and Lister Knowlton Post 9389 VFW Ladies Auxiliaries in Caribou, supporting veterans and their families over the years. Mrs. LaPlante was a longtime faithful member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Caribou and while in Florida was an active member of the Catherine Catholic Church. She became a member of the holy community offering communion to those who were shut in’s or unable to leave their home for traditional church services offering communion. This was one of the most enjoyable times of her life, offering spiritual support to others. Germaine was a talented craftswoman with the ability to sew a wardrobe, knit mittens, hats, scarfs and sweaters and crochet which she enjoyed as a pass time. One of her favorite things to do was to knit slippers for others, many in which she donated to the Maine’s Veteran’s Home in Caribou and the Caribou Nursing home. Friends may call at the Mockler Funeral Home 24 Reservoir Street Caribou 2-4 pm Sunday . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 am Monday June 6, 2016 from the Parish of the Precious Blood Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Old Holy Rosary Cemetery.
