NEW SWEDEN - Gerald "Jerry" Nelson, 79, of Aroostook County, ME, passed away, Saturday, June 4, 2016.A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 25 at G.A. Lutheran Church, 48 Capitol Hill Rd., New Sweden with Reverend Robert Smith officiating. Burial at New Sweden cemetery will follow the service. A memorial luncheon will be held at the church following the burial.Jerry was born September 18, 1936 in New Sweden, ME to Emil and Anne Nelson. He attended Caribou High School and earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maine at Fort Kent. He was married to Jean Blackstone for 19 years. Some of his lifetime endeavors include department store manager, salesman, active in the local Democratic Party, National Guard member, and Deputy Sheriff. When he wasn't enjoying his life's passion for fishing, Jerry could often be found at Stan's and later at Anderson's having coffee and engaging in lively conversation. Jerry was also known for his love of the Swedish colonies and its history and received a lifetime membership in the Swedish Historical Society.Jerry is survived by his three children Ken Nelson and his wife Sherron of Plainville, CT, Kerri McClafferty, and Chuck Nelson and his wife Valerie of Fredericksburg, VA; seven grandchildren AJ, Krystal Nelson, and Heather Nelson Contrastano of CT, and Jeremiah and Rebecca McClafferty, and Brett and Krystina Harte of VA; and three great grandchildren Blake and Luke Contrastano and Peter Fabrizio, Jr. He also leaves behind many close friends and family including his longtime friend, roommate, and care giver Margaret Johnson.
