Gerald J. Masse

Caribou - Gerald J. Masse 76, died December 2, 2012 at Presque Isle following a long illness. He was born in Van Buren Maine May 24, 1936, the ninth son of the late Alfred and Ozithe (Lajoie) Masse. He attended Van Buren schools until the eleventh grade when he left school to help on the family farm. After marrying the woman of his dreams, Carlene J (Ouellette) Masse on June 29, 1957 they moved to Conn. to start their life together and raise a family. He lived in Conn. and worked for his late brother Anthelm Masse in construction for twenty years before moving his wife and family back to Maine. In Caribou he was in a partnership with his brother Gilman for seventeen years also in construction. Gerald loved working in construction and was respected by many in the field. Following his retirement, Gerald was often called upon for his construction advice with various projects at hand. He was also an avid snowmobiler who purchased a total of thirty-one new Arctic Cat snowmobiles and who put on approximately 165,000 miles during his snowmobiling years of 1972 - 2007. He enjoyed is long trips to Canada with his friends but he also enjoyed taking his family on snowmobiling outings. He was one of Caribou’s first snowmobile trail groomers. Gerald was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He served as an usher for approximately 20 years as well as serving on the parish council. He was also a long time Fourth Degree member of the Fred V. Brescia Council 1870 Knights of Columbus. Gerald was also a longtime active member of the Lions club and served one term as King Lion. Most importantly Gerald was a devoted loving husband and father and grandfather. Surviving in addition to his wife of 55 years, Carlene of Caribou, are three sons and daughters-in- law, Glenn and Connie Masse of Bowerbank, David Masse and Cathy Place his significant other of Caribou, Mark and Kimberly Masse of Sebec, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Kerry Staples of Hollis, Tammy and Rodney Pooler of Caribou; Three brothers and sisters-in-laws, Raynold and Leola Masse, Newman and Muriel Masse, Gilman and Guilda Masse, four sisters and brothers-in-law, Geraldine and Gerard Cyr, Rena and Bob Dubay, Jeanine and Chanel St. Jean and Claudette Milliard. A former sister in law, Patsy Masse. Eight grandchildren, Jessica Masse and Jenny Wohlfeil, Lance Masse, Olivia Staples, Logan and Luke Masse and Kyle and Renée Pooler, many nieces and nephews. Gerald was predeceased by Nelson Masse, Herman Masse, Yvette Cyr, Cecile St. Jean, Anthelm Masse, Delmar Masse and Pauline Maillet. Friends may call at the Mockler Funeral Home 24 Reservoir Street Caribou 6-8 pm Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Wednesday December 4, 2012 from the Parish of the Precious Blood, Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
