CARIBOU - George Wayne Buck, 94, died April 4, 2023 following an illness at the Aroostook House of Comfort. He was born March 10, 1929 the son of Percy H. and Edith (Driscoll) Buck in the home his ancestors built over 200 years prior. It was in this home that he lived most of his life. Wayne attended Caribou High School, where he came in first place in a speaking contest. He then went on to compete in a speaking contest at the University of Maine, where he again came in first. Wayne then competed at a contest at Rutger’s University in New Jersey, where he achieved a third place standing, out of 48 states competing. Wayne attended the University of Maine for 2 years where he excelled in the agriculture course. Following college he enrolled in the United States Air Force. His military service was short as he was needed at home on the family farm. He returned to the family farm on the Buck Road in Caribou to become a potato grower and keep the family business running. On April 10, 1954 he married Augustine Gagnon, and together they shared over 68 years of marriage.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Augustine Buck, of Presque Isle, a daughter, Laura Carroll and her husband Jeff of Oregon, two grandsons, Nicholas and Ryan, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Mark Buck, a sister, Marjorie Smallwood, as well as his twin sister, Arlene Frechette.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery, Caribou, on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 1PM.
