June 14, 1939 — July 30, 2020

Caribou - Eloise J. (Dow) Penny of Caribou passed away peacefully at Woodlands Senior Living of Waterville on July 30, 2020. She was born in Perham, on June 14, 1939, the daughter of Linwood and Jennie (McNeal) Dow. She was very proud to be the daughter of a hardworking farmer and as a child worked alongside her brothers in the potato fields. She was a graduate of Washburn District High School class of 1957 where she was active in many clubs and organizations. That same year she married the love of her life, Airman John C. Penny, who she met at a coffee shop while he was stationed in Presque Isle, on December 24th.They celebrated 52 years of marriage until his death in 2009. Together they raised three children in Caribou.

After spending many years raising her family Eloise proudly became a certified nurse’s aide working alongside her mother at the Presque Isle Nursing Home. She spent several years as a pharmacy technician, first at Havey’s Pharmacy and then later at Rite Aid in Caribou until her retirement. Eloise was a true people person and interacting with the public was one of her finest gifts. For many years after her retirement people would fondly comment on how much they enjoyed dealing with her at the pharmacy. Eloise was a proud member of the Gray United Methodist Church where she was active in the Jenny Lyon Circle. She was a longtime member of the Cary Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary where she also served as president.

Eloise cherished her family and loved spending time with them. She rarely missed her children’s or grandchildren’s academic, musical or sporting events and was always their biggest cheerleader. She also enjoyed many years of bowling, trips, and cards with the “bowling girls” as she fondly referred to them.

Eloise was predeceased by her loving husband John, her parents Linwood and Jennie Dow, her three brothers, infant Lloyd, Norman and Travis Dow, and two grandchildren Jason and Christopher. She is survived by her three children, JoAnn Blackstone of Caribou, Lloyd Penny of Oakland and partner Christine and son Cameron, and Lori and her husband Gregg Collins of Caribou. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Julie Blackstone, Ryan Blackstone, Emily Collins Protzmann, Annie Collins, Adam Collins as well as 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. Eloise is also survived by her dear brother and sister-in-law Dwayne and Evelyn Dow of Wade, several nieces and nephews.

Eloise’s children would like to sincerely thank the staff of Woodlands Senior Living for the wonderful care Mom received during her short time there and heartfelt thanks to her special caregivers and friends in Caribou, Rita, Colleen and Linda.
