David Lloyd Quimby passed away at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston on Saturday, September 10, 2022 after a brief illness. Dave was born the youngest of eight children of Albert and Lillian Quimby in Caribou on July 19, 1949. After attending Caribou schools and working with his father in his trash collection business, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and served in Vietnam, where he operated heavy equipment clearing roads in advance of troop movements. Dave continued in the construction trade after his military service, working many years for Brescia Construction in Caribou.
December 31, 1972 changed his life, and those of his family, forever. That is when he met the love of his life, Patsyann (Sally) on a blind date. She put Dave through his paces to make sure he had staying power, meanwhile in his words, he fell in love with us, her five children, and knew he had to make things work. Dave was the most devoted Dad, husband and friend that anyone could hope for. In his understated way he would make you laugh and teach you a lesson over a cup of coffee. He was playful and kind and taught us how to be good people through dinnertime conversations and by the example that he set.
Dave adored fishing with his brothers, his nephew/best friend Bob Hersey, and his grandson Austin. Other family members would join in from time to time, but Dave, Bob and Austin had a special connection. After Sally’s death in 2003, Dave moved home to Caribou to be closer to family and friends. Bob and his sisters Susan and Juanita have been the heart of a village that helped Dave live independently in his beloved hometown and we are forever grateful.
Dave is survived by four of his children: Terry and his wife Pat Carter and their children Jessica and Jennifer; Colon and his wife Cindy Carter and their daughter Hillary; Ruth Rose and her children Charles, Emily and Aaron; and Lisa and her husband Mike Averell and her children Austin, Ashley and Bradley. He is also survived by a sister, Mabel Wilcox, by numerous nieces and nephews and by five great grandchildren. Dave was predeceased by his parents, his wife Sally, his son Kevin Scott Bragdon; by brothers Lewis, Floyd and William; by sisters Evelyn, Joyce and Viola; and by two grandsons Ian Matthew Carter and Bryan James Carter.
A funeral service will be held at 1PM on Monday, October 3, 2022 at Mockler Funeral Home, with burial to follow at the Northern Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Caribou. Dave will be laid to rest with his wife Sally and his son Scott, with full military honors. The celebration of Dave’s life will continue with a reception at the VFW hall with refreshments provided by the kindness of Dave’s VFW friends.
