Daniel H. Raymond

September 17, 1965 — March 23, 2023

Caribou - Daniel H. Raymond, 57, died unexpectedly March 23, 2023 in Caribou the result of an automobile accident. He was born in Caribou, September 17, 1965 the son of the late Albert and Louise (Rockwell) Raymond. He was a 1985 graduate of Caribou High School as well as a 1986 graduate of Wyoming Technical Institute with his auto body certification. He married Shelby Theriault May 21, 1994. Dan began a career in fire service when he became a volunteer for Caribou Fire Department in 1991. He then became a fulltime firefighter with the Loring Air Force Base Fire Department from 1992 - 1995. It was while he was there that he received his FAA Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) certification. In 1995, Dan became a Career Firefighter for the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department. Dan worked his way up the ranks at Caribou Fire and Ambulance over his nearly 32 year career, spending 4 as a Volunteer, 28 as a Career Firefighter/Paramedic, attaining the rank Captain in 2016. Captain Raymond was very active not only in the department, but in the entire community itself. He would frequently participate in public education such as Learn not to Burn, CPR and Fire Extinguisher training. Dan was never idle. He also held parttime jobs at Mockler Funeral Home as a funeral attendant, had a cleaning contract at the National Weather Bureau office in Caribou, and the Aroostook County Action Program doing building maintenance. Dan made many treasured friends wherever he went. He rarely missed city functions such as Thursday’s on Sweden, Small Business Saturday, and Santa’s Reindeer. In addition, he participated in various activities such as being a prior member of the Red Knights Firefighter Motorcycle Club, a Senior Warden for Caribou Masonic Lodge #170 A.F.& A.M., a Proud Shriner, and was a member of the Klown unit where he was known as “Band-Aide”. He was also a member of the Caribou Emergency Amateur Radio Service. Danny was active in the Caribou Future Farmers of America and he and his son attended several national conventions together. He was a member of the Aroostook Tractor Club and enjoyed working on his old tractor and going to tractor pulls with his son Tyler. Dan truly loved anything with an engine and if you can name it, he probably owned one at one time or another, worked on one, knew someone who had one, and more than likely had raced one. He loved attending heavy metal rock concerts with family and friends, and going to New Brunswick in the winter to watch minor league hockey, where he would of course have to stop and get a Greco Donair and a Sussex ginger ale. He is the Father of Tyler Raymond, who is a Paid Call Firefighter for Caribou Fire and Ambulance. They both have worked many scenes together, with one goal, to help others. Danny was most recently in charge of the Water Street fire in Caribou. He made a decision to blast air horns and sirens on scene to alert others who may be in danger. Families thanked him for this action as they would not have known to evacuate.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Shelby, of Caribou are his son and best friend, Tyler Raymond and Tyler’s significant other Elizabeth Defanti of Limestone, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dwane and Judy Theriault Sr. of Caribou, and his very special fire service family. He is also survived by his faithful canine companion, Walter Ray Raymond.

A firefighter funeral procession in his honor will begin at approximately 1:35 PM, Sunday, April 2, 2023 from the Mockler Funeral Home, past the fire station and arriving at Caribou High School where funeral services will be held at 2:00PM with Rev. Ron Rosser and Fire Chaplain Troy Heald officiating. Following the services all are invited to visit with the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the school cafeteria.  Friends who wish to contribute in his memory may do so through the Captain Danny Raymond Light Up the Community Fund C/O Caribou Volunteer Fire Department – Attn: Brian Lajoie, P.O. Box 88 Caribou, Maine, 04736. The link for the funeral service will not go live until approximately 15 minutes before the service starts at 2PM.
