Cathie Richards

October 29, 1953 — April 21, 2015

CARIBOU – Cathie Lynn Richards, 61, passed away suddenly April 21, 2015 at her Caribou residence. She was born in Caribou, October 29, 1953 the daughter of Hubert and Georgine (Cassidy) Richards. Cathie was the only girl in a family of seven. Following her graduation from Caribou High School in 1972 she moved to California to attend college because she “wanted to change the world”. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California and set about doing just that. In 1982, Cathie returned to Northern Maine, travelling across the country in a small car with her brother, Tim, and three dogs. She loved her family, including her furry family, who brought her so much joy. She always had room in her home and her heart for another dog, cat or bird. In 1997, Cathie married James Saucier and together they started a kennel to care for other people’s pets. Cathie had no children of her own but she dedicated her life to caring for children through her 35 year career with the Department of Human Services in Caribou. She worked with an innovative program, taking groups of teenagers who were about to leave foster care canoe-camping on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway to help them gain confidence, learn independence and self-reliance, develop an appreciation of nature and take responsibility for each other. Her devotion changed the world for so many young people in Aroostook County. Cathie enjoyed spending time at her camp on the lake, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching old movies, reading and working on her flowers. Surviving in addition to her husband, Jim and her mother, Georgine both of Caribou are her brothers; Steve Richards and special friend Doreen Bouchard, Tim Richards and wife Lorelei Locke, Chris Richards and special friend Judy Dombroski, Dennis Richards and wife Paula, and Dan Richards all of Caribou, nieces and nephew; Matthew and Allison Richards, and Jillian Adams, a great niece Molly Adams, and a great nephew Coltin Hopkins. Cathie was predeceased by her father, Hubert and a brother Davey. Friends may call at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou, from 4pm until time of services which will be held at 6pm on Friday, April 24, 2015 from the chapel of the funeral home.
