Woodland and Fort Myers FL. -Barbara Leighton Hallowell, 93, died January 3, 2013 at Fort Myers, Florida. She was born on May 6, 1919 in Limestone the daughter of Harold and Sarah (Phair) Leighton. She graduated from Limestone High School in 1935 and attended Presque Isle Normal School for two years, receiving her teaching certificate in 1936. She taught for a year in a one-room school in Caribou at a salary of $14.00 per week. She then worked a year teaching grade four in Stockholm for $16.00 per week. While teaching there, she met and married Richard Hallowell, Jr. In the following years, she taught at Woodland, Perham and Caribou Junior High Schools for a total of twenty six years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Maine at Fort Kent and she also served as organist and choir director at First Baptist Church of Woodland for more than twenty years. After retiring from teaching in 1968, she and her husband spent winters in Florida and summers at Madawaska Lake, enjoying many happy family get-togethers there. . She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Richard W. Hallowell Jr. She is survived by her five children: Sarah Tukey of Sorrento, Judith Hallowell of Ft. Myers, FL, Richard W. Hallowell III and his wife Candice of Woodland, Dana L. Hallowell and his wife Cheryl of Madawaska Lake, and John H. Hallowell and his wife Julie of York. 10 Grandchildren, Twenty Two great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 1:00 pm Saturday January 12, 2013 from the First Baptist Church of Woodland with Rev. Ron Rosser officiating assisted by Rev. Otto Palmer. Interment will be in the spring at the Fairview Cemetery, Perham. Following the service all are invited to visit with the family and enjoy continued fellowship and refreshments in the church dining hall.
