CARIBOU – Avis McDougal Armstrong, 91, passed away April 27, 2020. She was born in Caribou, April 22, 1929 the daughter of Hazelton and Madeline (Levesque) McDougal. Avis married Kenneth Donald Armstrong on January 16, 1946. She was a graduate of Caribou High School Class of 1946, and the University of Maine at Presque Isle as a Certified Librarian in 1985. Avis worked at the Fort Fairfield Library for 11 years, Presque Isle Public Library as a children’s librarian, and was head librarian at Caribou Public Library for 11 years, retiring in 1993.
Avis was a former member of the First Parish Church in Fort Fairfield where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, a Sunday school teacher, a Youth Leader and a member of the Dorcas Circle of the United Parish Women. Later in years she returned to her home church, the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church in Caribou where she was a member of the Piburn Circle, the Jenny Lyons Circle and UMW.
Avis had a deep interest in history. She was secretary of the Grimes Mills Cemetery Association where she worked on the restoration and recorded the history of the cemetery. She wrote the history of the Grimes area on Madawaska Stream, which along with the cemetery record was published by the Caribou Historical Society. She wrote many other articles about Caribou histories that were printed by the Historical Society, various Maine and area publications. Avis and her husband Ken were instrumental in the development of the Historical Society and worked many hours at the Historical Museum.
Other organizations Avis belonged to were: Maine Library Association, Aroostook Library Association, Round Table Writers Club, Caribou Day Extension, Nylander Museum Board of Trustees, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and was active in University of Maine’s Senior Achievement Greater Education Program (SAGE).
In 2002, Avis was selected as Caribou’s representative to the Women, Work and Community Program celebrating women’s achievements.
Avis is survived by her brother Darrel McDougal of Glenburn, a sister-in-law Shirley Woods of Nashua, N.H. and many nieces and nephews, her children and their spouses; Jean and Al Morrow of Bradley, Judy Armstrong of Freeport, Brett and Linda Armstrong of Bangor, Donald and Becky Armstrong of Brewer, Carol and David Johnson of E. Eddington, and Ward Armstrong of Caribou, 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Avis was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Armstrong of Caribou, a daughter, Christine Henderson, 2 brothers, Haze McDougal II and Donald McDougal both of Caribou, and 2 sisters-in-law Betty McDougal and Olive McDougal of Caribou.
