WOODLAND – Shirley M. Sutherland, 96, died December 3, 2021 at Caribou. She was predeceased by her husband Hayden Sutherland and her brother Elwood Spear. She was born in Limestone, May 24, 1925 the daughter of the late Waldo and Rilla (Ramsay) Spear. She attended Fort Fairfield schools and graduated from Fort Fairfield High School. She was a member of Gray Memorial United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included knitting, sewing, cooking, traveling, and she was a devoted Red Sox and Celtics fan. Reading was a favorite pastime, especially while spending time at the family camp on Madawaska Lake. Shirley and her husband, Hayden, operated their family farm for many years. Throughout her life, she was a respected member of the banking community as well. After retiring from banking and farming, she volunteered countless hours to the Woodland School sharing her love of reading. Shirley was a stubborn and independent lady and remained so until the very end of her days. She is survived by her children, Rebecca Sutherland of New Sweden, Adelbert Sutherland of Westmanland, Brian Sutherland and wife Jane of Caribou, Paul Sutherland and wife Debbie of Woodland, and her grandchildren, Taylor, Kyle, Logan and Gabrielle, and her great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Quinn, Django, and Zappa. She also survived by many wonderful brother and sister in-laws in the Sutherland family. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery.
