Rachel Ouellette
VAN BUREN – Rachel R. Ouellette, 86, passed away February 1, 2021 at Caribou. She was born in Van Buren, June 28, 1934 the daughter of John F. and Odelie (Gervais) Doucette. Mrs. Ouellette began working at the age of 9 first picking potatoes, then moving to banking. She was employed by Northern National Bank, Casco Northern Bank, and then People’s Heritage Bank for a total of 15 years – she then worked at Day’s Inn in Caribou for 5 years. Rachel was a faithful communicant of the St. Bruno – St. Remi Catholic Church, where she was a member of two mercy meal committees, the Daughters of Isabella group, where she was also on the bowling league. She also volunteered with the People Helping People Thrift Shop. She was active in community organizations, including as a Girl Scout leader, a former Lioness Club Member, Van Buren Chapter of Columbiettes, and a member of the Living Heritage Society that takes care of the Acadian Village. Rachel was a commissioner on the Van Buren Housing Authority for ten years, where she served as the first chairwoman for 2 years. She was the Vice President of the Friends of the A.J. Morneault Library, and served as the chairperson of the Social Justice and Peace Commission. Rachel was also an avid Snowmobiler and belonged to the Gateway Snowmobile Club and served as Secretary and Treasurer for several years.
Mrs. Ouellette was predeceased by her parents, a son, Wayne Ouellette, and her brothers, Reno and Roger “Bee” Doucette. She is survived by 2 sons, Carl Ouellette and significant other Corinne of Woodland, and Keith Ouellette and his wife Darlene of Van Buren, 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Carlene Madore of Van Buren, and Gloria Smith of Hermon, a brother, Roderick Doucette of Van Buren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the spring at St. Bruno Catholic Church, Van Buren. Interment will be in the Old St. Bruno Catholic Cemetery, Van Buren.
